The World Trade Organization (WTO) is set to appoint its first female Director-General in its twenty-five years of existence after its members selected Nigeria’s candidate, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and South Korea’s candidate, Yoo Myung-Hee, as the final two candidates.
According to Bloomberg, trusted sources confirmed that the WTO members voted in favour of the two candidates as the finalists in the race for the top job.
As the WTO General Council Chairman, David Walker, prepares to formally announce the results to the institution’s delegates on Thursday morning in Geneva, tributes have been pouring in from several quarters to celebrate one of the most brilliant gems Nigeria has ever produced.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s daughter, Onyinye Iweala, wrote, “@NOIweala: Mommy, I am so proud of you! Keep it up!”
Pan African Business women’s activities also tweeted, “Our #wcw is dedicated to our #wce@NOIweala We have written to the @wto & made official our request (demand) for an African leader to be appointed into the DG role.”
Dr Joe Abah wrote, “Where were we on that @NOIweala matter again? Some people were making noise about Benin Republic, then about Egypt, then about Kenya. Your Ezemmuo told you not to worry. Now she’s one of the final 2 women. Ezemmuo doesn’t want fowl and schnapps anymore o. Na tithes I want now.”
President Buhari’s Special Assistant on New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, wrote, “World Trade Organization @wto members selected two final candidates — Nigeria’s @NOIweala & South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee — to advance to the final round in the race to lead the Geneva-based trade body, according to people familiar with the matter. By advancing two women to the final round of the selection process, the WTO will likely have the first female director-general in its 25-year history.”
He added, “Great news emerging from WTO DG selection rounds. Go NOI! Go Nigeria!! It’s not over yet but we’re on the right track!”
Prof. PLO Lumumba wrote, “Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is a gem. Let all Africans support her to head the WTO at a time when AfCTA is germinating. Go, Sister Ngozi!”
@LiberHuman wrote, “What a terrible day for Global Britain: Liam Fox kicked out of the race to become head of World Trade Organisation. Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee will go head-to-head to become the trade body’s first female director-general.”
Craig Murray wrote, “Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, former no. 2 at World Bank, an economist from Harvard and MIT. You Myung-Hee South Korean minister of trade, a senior trade official for 28 years much involved with the WTO. By putting up a no-hope candidate like Liam Fox, the UK further became a laughing stock.”
Hon. Robert Murathe tweeted, “EU Monday endorsed Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea to battle it out in the final round.” Ngozi is eminently MORE QUALIFIED.”
Oluwakemi wrote, “I can’t wait to break this news tomorrow. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala became the first female to hold WTO DG position.”
Akwa Ibom online wrote, “The @wto will likely have the first female director-general in its 25-year history as no woman has ever headed the global trade body. If Dr. Okonjo-Iweala wins the final elimination, she would not only be the first woman, but also the first African to lead the global trade body.”
