Manchester United’s goalkeeper, David De Gea, was at fault for all three goals as his team lost out on a place in the FA Cup final to Chelsea at Wembley
For years, the Spanish international has been Manchester United’s beacon of hope as they went through a tumultuous phase after legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. The once undisputed World number one goalkeeper has now become a liability for the Red Devils.
Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became the coach, De Gea’s form has been shaky at best with a few errors this season costing his team precious points. However, after last night’s horrendous display, various sections of the Red Devils fan base have decided that they have had enough.
There were calls for De Gea to be demoted to a squad role and replaced by promising England goalkeeper Dean Henderson. Henderson, who currently plays for Sheffield United, is on loan from Manchester United.
Despite the calls for De Gea to be demoted, Solskjaer continues to back the Spaniard and even tagged him as the best goalkeeper in the world after he made a costly error against Tottenham Hotspur in the first premier league match after football resumed.
De Gea made his first costly error after he failed to keep out Olivier Giroud’s finish which was directed straight at him. Shortly after the second half began, De Gea made another error as he failed to keep out a tame 25-yard shot from Mason Mount. The third goal which was an own goal from Maguire beat De Gea at his near post. It was a poor display from the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.
As Manchester United chases a top-four finish with two games to the end of the season, Solskjaer faces a tough decision to determine if he can risk starting De Gea in the two most crucial games of United’s season.
