Defending English Premier League Champions, Liverpool, opened their account for the season with a hard-fought three points thanks to a hat-trick from Mo Salah.
Newly promoted side, Leeds United, gave the Reds a run for their money in a game which eventually ended 4-3 in favour of Liverpool.
Salah opened the scoring in the 4th minute from the penalty spot after Leeds defender Robin Koch blocked a goal-bound shot with his arm. Leeds equalized in brilliant fashion through Jack Harrison. Van Dijk put Liverpool ahead with a header from Robertson’s corner kick. Bamford capitalized on a poor clearance from Van Dijk to level the game. However, Salah put the Reds ahead with a brilliant shot as the first half ended 3-2 in Liverpool’s favour.
The second half was more balanced with the Reds controlling the game as they looked to hold on to their lead. However, Mateusz Klich had other ideas as he brilliantly controlled a pass from Rodrigo and fired past Allison to level the scores. From there, Liverpool huffed and puffed. Van Dijk saw a goal ruled out in the 81st minute after a foul in the build-up.
In the 88th minute, Fabinho was fouled in the Leeds penalty box and Salah scored the winning goal from the penalty spot to hand Liverpool a hard-fought three points.
