Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has been elected the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS).

Akufo-Addo was elected as the new ECOWAS Chair at the ongoing 57th Summit at the Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre, Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic.

During the summit, President Muhammadu Buhari warned African leaders against the unnecessary elongation of tenure in office. According to him, the trend was becoming a source of trouble for the region.
