Police have arrested seven suspects, including serving and dismissed soldiers, for the armed attack on a bullion van that led to the death of four policemen in Ebonyi State.
Newsbreakers reported that a group of armed men attacked a bullion van moving from Enugu State to Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital on July 29, 2020, and killed four policemen in the process. The operation was not successful as the driver escaped with the van and drove towards a military checkpoint before they could hijack it.
Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) launched a manhunt with technical Intelligence Support from TIU which led to the arrest of 45-year-old Alfred Robinson. The suspect who is a native of Gelegele Town in Ovia North LGA of Edo State was arrested on August 1 in Asaba, Delta State.
IRT Detectives arrested six more gang members within 24hrs. They include Sgt Ayeni Samuel, a Nigerian Soldier serving in Ikeja, Lagos; Cpl Emeka Harrison a dismissed Soldier who had served in Maiduguri Borno State; Emeka Illo, the Sponsor of the operation; and Abuchi Elijah Aka “ Chime D Mosquito” an Informant for the robbers and Ibanifiroi Ekiene a native of Tombia Community.
The Police recovered 12 undetonated improvised explosives, one GPMG, six rifles, 51 AK-47 magazines, 1,620 ammunition, 2 robbed vehicles, breaking implements, and charms from the suspects. According to reports, the suspects have confessed to the bullion van robbery in Ebonyi State.
The suspects have also reportedly confessed that 4 out of the rifles recovered belong to the Policemen they killed during the robbery. They are currently assisting the police in apprehending the remaining members of their gang.
