The Republic of Kenya has declared its support for Nigeria’s candidate in the race for the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The WTO DG race has advanced to its final stage with two candidates left in the running. Dr Okonjo-Iweala and South Korean candidate, Yoo Myung-Hee saw off competition from several other formidable candidates including Kenya’s Amina Mohamed.

In a statement by Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country threw its full weight behind Dr Okonjo-Iweala. Kenya declared that while it strongly believed its candidate was the best, it has accepted that the process has to move on.

The Republic of Kenya then reiterated that it was Africa’s turn to lead the WTO. It wished Dr Okonjo-Iweala the best and promised to continue to play an important role in the WTO DG selection process.
